Honoring Our Heroes: Addressing Addiction Among Service Members

This Memorial Day, we reflect not only on the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, but also on those who return home with invisible wounds and the ongoing fight many face in silence.

The Battle After the Battlefield

Military service is marked by sacrifice, strength, and resilience. But the experiences endured during service, combat exposure, loss, trauma, separation from family, can leave lasting emotional and psychological scars. For some veterans and active service members, these struggles lead to substance use as a way to cope.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, more than 1 in 10 veterans have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder, a rate higher than the general population. Alcohol, prescription medications, and illicit drugs are often misused in an attempt to self-medicate symptoms of PTSD, depression, chronic pain, and anxiety.

Why It’s Hard to Ask for Help

For many in the military community, seeking help can feel like a sign of weakness or failure. The stigma around mental health and addiction, especially in traditionally stoic, high-pressure environments, prevents countless individuals from reaching out. But the truth is, asking for help is a profound act of courage.

Recovery Is Possible, You Don’t Have to Fight Alone

At Revive Recovery Centers, we deeply honor the strength it takes to serve and the strength it takes to heal. That’s why we offer compassionate, confidential care tailored to the needs of veterans and service members. Our trauma-informed approach acknowledges the unique challenges of military life and supports the whole person, body, mind, and spirit.

Whether you or a loved one is battling alcohol dependence, prescription drug misuse, or struggling with co-occurring PTSD and addiction, you are not alone and you deserve support without judgment.

This Memorial Day: Honor the Fallen, Support the Living

As we remember the heroes who paid the ultimate price, let’s also stand by those who are still fighting. This Memorial Day, let your gratitude extend beyond remembrance. Reach out, check in, and be a source of support.
